How to Balance Your Life with Work, Family, and Friends


Today's work environment is unlike anything we’ve seen before. The unfortunate side effect: it’s also made it more difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance. When you spend most of your day at work, it’s inevitable that there will be tension with other areas of your life. But while some may view this as a trade-off or sacrifice, keeping these things in balance actually improves your performance at work and makes you happy in all areas of your life. Here is how you can achieve a balance in all areas of your life:

Plan your life and stick to it.

When work is the center of your life, you miss out on a lot of the other things that are important for a balanced life. If you don’t have a plan for how you'll spend your time, you’ll easily get sucked into the never-ending cycle of work, home, and more work. The best way to avoid this is to plan your life in advance. Make a schedule and try to stick to it as closely as possible. This will not only help you avoid getting dragged into the work trap but will also help you avoid being a workaholic. Even if your job isn’t extremely demanding, the constant feeling of being behind can easily lead to workaholism. If you feel the urge to work longer hours, ask yourself why. Are you trying to impress your boss? Do you subconsciously want to avoid spending time with your friends and family?

Put a pause on work emails after-hours.

Once you leave the office for the day, that should be it. You don’t have to respond to every email as soon as you receive it — and in fact, there are benefits to not doing so. Putting a pause on email after-hours will help you to:

  • Improve your health: When you’re constantly on call and working, it can have a large impact on your health. You can experience anxiety, stress, and increased blood pressure — not to mention sleep deprivation.

  • Improve your relationships: Those around you will appreciate your efforts to disconnect — and they’ll be more likely to do the same when appropriate.

  • Improve your productivity: Working more doesn’t always equate to more productivity. In some cases, it could actually have the opposite effect.

Make exercise a priority.

Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress, improve your mental and physical health, and help you sleep better at night. It’s also a great way to de-stress after a long day at work. Research has shown that even just a quick walk outside can positively affect your stress level. Making exercise a priority is one of the best things you can do for your health and well-being. It doesn’t need to be overly complicated — just find an activity and stick with it. If you have a few options, you can rotate between them and make it easier to fit into your schedule. Exercise is also a great way to meet new people and form new friendships. If you find yourself struggling to make friends outside of work, consider a few different types of exercise: sports, dance classes, yoga, etc.

Take care of yourself with nutrition and sleep.

Your diet and sleep are two key factors for your general well-being. You can’t function at your best if you’re sleep-deprived. Similarly, you’ll be better able to fend off illness if you’re taking care of your diet. Are you getting enough nutrients? You might think you’re eating well — but it’s not always that cut and dry. Take stock of what you’re eating and try to make improvements where needed. Are you getting enough sleep? You can’t control how long you sleep, but you can control how well you sleep. Try to lower the amount of blue light you’re exposed to before bed (use a blue light blocker on your phone, install F.lux on your computer, etc.).
